Parts of Speech (POS)


The part of speech is the primary categories of words according to their function in a sentence.




1)     Noun :-

            Nouns are words that indicate a person, a place , idea or thing.

   Example: cat, girl, pencil, book


    

                 There are different types of nouns namely:

§  Proper– proper nouns always start with a capital letter and refers to specific names of persons, places, or things.

 

Examples: Volkswagen Beetle, England, Pepsi

 

§  Common– common nouns are the opposite of proper nouns. These are just generic names of persons, things, or places.

 

Examples: car, Country,Ocean

 

§  Concrete– this kind refers to nouns which you can perceive through your five senses.

 

Examples: folder, sand, board, book

 

§  Abstract- unlike concrete nouns, abstract nouns are those which you can’t perceive through your five senses.

 

Examples: happiness, grudge, bravery, Faith

 

§  Count– it refers to anything that is countable, and has a singular and plural form.

 

Examples:  kitten, video, ball

 

§  Mass– this is the opposite of count nouns. Mass nouns are also called non-countable nouns, and they need to have “counters” to quantify them.

 

Examples of Counters: kilo, cup, meter

 

Examples of Mass Nouns: rice, flour, lemon

 

§  Collective– refers to a group of persons, animals, or things.

 

Example: Class,Actors, Birds Singers

 

2)     Pronoun :-

                   A word used in place of noun is called pronoun.

   Example: Iit, he, she, mine, his, hers, we, they, theirs, and ours.



3)     Verb:-

                      A word shows an action is called verb.

               Example: run, walk, write, sing, listen  

  


             

4)     Adjective : -

                       A word that describes noun or pronoun is called adjective.

         Example: fast, slow, big, tall, wide



5)     Adverb :-

              A word that describes verb or adjective is called adverb.

   Example: Slowly, quickly, commonly


 

6)     Preposition :-

                     Prepositions are words that express a relationship between a noun and pronoun.

    Example: on, in, to, at, under, over 

 

7)     Conjunction:-

                     Conjunctions are words that connect the words, phrases and clauses.

    Example: and, but, or, nor because



8)     Interjection :-

                     A word that express strong or sudden emotion.

        Example: wow! , oh! ,  hey!
