Unit - 3 .1 Coromandel Fishers

                     This poem is written by Sarojini Naidu. This poem is about the fishermen’s life of Coromadel coast. this poem consists of three stanzas having four lines each. 

  • Stanza 1.  

            The poetess asks the fisherman to ‘Rise’ as the day is about to appear and plead them to rise from their sleep.  The sea wind that leads to storm is now Calm Thus the wind is just like the child who kept crying throughout the night and now he is quit.  Here the poetess uses simile to compare now calm wind with a child.   The fishermen should collect their nets from sea shores and take their boats because the tide is full of wealth (fishes).  They just need to go to the sea to capture the wealth that is theirs.

  • Stanza 2.

       The fishermen tell among themselves that to do everything fast.  Sea ​​is considered the mother because it feeds them and helps them, Clouds are their brothers because they guide the fisherman, and the waves are friends because they keep moving with them.  If they could not return back by the sunset the sea god drives them.

  •   Stanza 3

          According to the fishermen, the landscape that they have left behind is giving great Pleasure with its open space in the shades of coconut trees, the smell of mango grove. The sand at the  o’the Moon with Sound of the voices on the shore which they love very much.  The water drops falling on the face while in the sea. The foam which forms by the up - down movement of the tides so they plead to one another to row their boats to the edge of the horizon.

4.      Favourite Lines :- My favourite lines are -

1.      Sweet is the shade of the coconut glade, and the scent of mango grove

2.      Sea is our mother, the cloud is our brother, the waves are our comrades all.

5.      Theme: - 

       The poem addresses the fishermen, telling that it is dawn and time for them to wake up and set out their boats to capture the wealth of the sea. A life of comfort spent relaxing in the cool shade of trees is very attractive. But the speaker believes that a life of hard work is much better.

6.      Figure of Speech :-

·        Simile - ‘The wind lies in the arms of the dawn like a child that has cried all night.’ The wind is compared to a child.

·        Metaphor – ‘Sea is our mother’ sea is compared to mother without using ‘as’ or ‘like’.

7.      Special Features: -

      This is a didactic poem. It is aimed at imparting some moral principles. When we come together for a common purpose and put our faith in God.

8.      Why I like the poem: -

          I like this poem because it gives a very positive message. We trust in god and do our work promptly, success is ours.
